UD’s Center for Public Horticulture offers GIS workshop

June 2, 2011 under CANR News, Events

The University of Delaware Center for Public Horticulture will hold a workshop titled “Geographic Information System (GIS) for Public Gardens: Getting Started” from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday, June 20, in the computer laboratory located in Room 116 Pearson Hall.

The workshop will guide participants through the process of creating a GIS for a public garden or a similar institution. Participants will learn how to download and install the data model template, how to create and edit map features in ArcGIS, a system that relies on accurate geographic information to make decisions, how to collect garden data, and how to create plant collection maps.

Participants will also be provided with crucial concepts and background information about GIS, managing and presenting garden collections data, and additional Alliance for Public Gardens GIS (APGG) support resources available for creating a public garden GIS for your own garden, park, nature center, zoo, cemetery, museum or public landscape.

Brian Morgan, developer of the model and current Putnam Research Fellow at Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, will lead the workshop, which is supported by the University of California Davis Arboretum through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Space is limited to 25 participants. A registration fee of $160 is due at time of registration and includes full-day workshop, course materials, refreshments and lunch. Walk-in registration fee is $175 if seats are available.

To register, and for information about directions, parking, regional transportation, accommodations, and registration policies, see the website.
