Jan. 20: Friends of Ag Breakfast

Gov. Jack Markell and U.S. Sen. Tom Carper will speak at a Friends of Ag Breakfast on Jan. 20, beginning at 7:15 a.m. This special Friends of Ag Breakfast is being held in conjunction with Delaware Ag Week, which runs Jan. 16-21.

The breakfast will take place at the Harrington Fire Company, located near the Delaware State Fairgrounds, where most Ag Week activities will be held.

In his talk, Markell will emphasize the important role that Delaware agriculture plays in the state’s economy and in its quality of life. He also will acknowledge the Young Farmer’s program, a brand-new initiative that reduces the capital investment for young people looking to set up an agribusiness.

Carper has chosen to reflect on the accomplishments of Delaware’s Nutrient Management Commission and the role that the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the University of Delaware have played in creating one of the most effective nutrient management programs in the nation.

Ag Week is presented annually by University of Delaware Cooperative Extension, Delaware State University Cooperative Extension and the Delaware Department of Agriculture. The Friends of Ag Breakfast is held three times throughout the year and is sponsored by University of Delaware Cooperative Extension.

Ag Week, now in its seventh year, draws farmers, agriculture industry professionals, Cooperative Extension specialists, research scientists and others together to exchange information and ideas. This year, presentations will be made on bumblebee pollination research in Delaware’s watermelon crop, labor issues for produce growers, grain marketing, maximizing forage utilization, and much more.

This season’s Friends of Ag Breakfast series ends on March 16 with a presentation by state Secretary of Agriculture Ed Kee. He will speak about the state of agriculture in Delaware and give an update about state Department of Agriculture activities. This breakfast will be held at the Modern Maturity Center, 1121 Forrest Avenue in Dover.

Poinsettia, Citrus Fruit Sale

As part of the holiday season, the Collegiate FFA will be taking orders for their annual poinsettia and citrus fruit sale from October 31st to November 18th.

The fruit last year was excellent and the varieties available have been tremendous-ranging from the traditional full and one-half cases of naval, pink (red) grapefruit, and tangelos to variety packs of mixed fruit including apples, pears, tangerines, navels, grapefruits, etc., all conveniently and attractively packaged. Best news yet – prices remain the same as last year! Citrus sales benefit the training, special activities, and community service efforts of the Collegiate FFA. Delivery is tentatively planned for the week of the December 5th.

The traditional poinsettia sale, with proceeds going into the Collegiate FFA Scholarship Fund, will feature red or white poinsettias in 6.5” pots with 4-6 blooms and 8” pots with 12-15 blooms. We were able to give two scholarships last year through your support. Delivery is also tentatively planned the week of December 5th, but not the same day as fruit.

A Collegiate FFA member will be stopping by CANR departments beginning this week. Should you be missed, feel free to contact our chapter advisors, Dr. Arba Henry (Rm 228, X1320) or Mrs. Alice Moore (Administrative Office, X2504). Payment is requested at the time of ordering.

Week of Oct. 24: Food Day events

The University of Delaware community is invited to join the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Food Science Club, Dining Services, Food Bank of Delawareand millions of Americans in celebration of national Food Day on Monday, Oct. 24.

Food Day is a national campaign to draw attention to celebrate healthy, affordable foods produced in a humane, sustainable way and to fix the food system by:

  • Reducing obesity and diet-related disease by promoting safe, healthy foods.
  • Supporting sustainable family farms and cutting subsides to huge agribusiness.
  • Ending urban and rural “food deserts” by providing access to healthy foods.
  • Protecting the environment and farm animals by reforming factory farms.
  • Promoting children’s health by curbing junk-food marketing aimed at kids.
  • Obtaining fair wages for all workers in the food system.

The Food Science Club will host two events on Monday, Oct. 24.  From 12:30-2:30 p.m., club members will be at Trabant University Center with information about Food Day’s mission, signing up students to volunteer with the Food Bank of Delaware.

Also on Monday, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Townsend Hall Commons, the Food Science Club and other food-related clubs at UD will host a panel discussion about important food related issues.  After the discussion, participants will be invited to stay and carve local pumpkins and enjoy local UDairy Creamery ice cream. Participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the event to donate to the Food Bank of Delaware.

In addition, throughout the week, bins will be available at all residential dining halls for students to drop off non-perishable food items for the Food Bank of Delaware.

On Thursday, Oct. 27, UD Dining Services will host Local Garden Harvest dinners in Kent, Pencader, Russell and Rodney dining halls from 5-7:30 p.m. featuring local and sustainable ingredients.

The UD Dining Services menu for the Local Garden Harvest dinner includes:

  • Butternut squash and apple soup made with locally grown butternut squash, roasted and blended with apples and farm fresh cream.
  • Chicken, potato and kale soup made with locally grown kale served in a tomato base soup.
  • Carved apple glazed pork loin served with a side of caramel apple bread pudding.
  • Monterey Aquarium Seafood Watch approved flounder seasoned and encrusted, served with sweet and tangy cabbage slaw and fresh Old Bay chips.
  • Homemade herb infused biscuits topped with exotic local mushroom ragout.
  • Zucchini, squash and onion sauté.
  • Locally grown, baked sweet potatoes with toppings (honey butter, cinnamon and sugar, marshmallows).
  • Chicken and waffles drizzled with UD’s own farm fresh Dare to Bee honey.
  • Organic whole wheat pasta served in a light tomato sauce.
  • Bacon, apple and cheddar panini on eight-grain sliced bread.
  • Succotash salad.
  • Mixed green salad with apples, cranberries and candied pecans topped with a Chaddsford Winery vinaigrette.
  • Assorted dinner rolls.
  • Gooey pumpkin cake.
  • Cranberry and apple strudel with maple glaze.

Cooperative Extension Annual Conference

Cooperative Extension professionals from University of Delaware and Delaware State University met on Tues. Oct. 18, for their annual conference in Dover, to celebrate their unique partnership and excellence in Extension outreach programing that serves Delaware’s families and agricultural constituents.

The conference’s keynote speaker was Linda Kay Benning, executive director of Northeast Cooperative Extension Director and associate director for Extension and Outreach at the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, located in Washington, D.C. Benning remarked on Extension’s rich history, the value of its current programming and the future of Extension funding at regional and national levels in the 21st century. Benning addressed the importance in raising awareness of the diverse programming that Cooperative Extension delivers to families, farmers, businesses and industry.

In recognition of Delaware’s Extension contribution the past year, the 2011 Cooperative Extension Awards of Excellence were announced:

Integration of Extension and Research Award:

  • Gordon Johnson, Maggie Moor-Orth, Richard Taylor, Phillip Sylvester, Rose Ogutu, Brigid McCrea, Megan, John Clendaniel, Dahlia O’Brien, Mike Wasylkowski, Lakhe Paudel, and Joann Walston.

Positively Outrageous Service Award for Innovative Marketing of Extension – Individual:

  • Carol Scott – 4-H Educator Afterschool program “Moving Youth Ahead.”
  • Mary Argo – 4-H Educator in Sussex County.

Positively Outrageous Service Award for Innovative Marketing of Extension – Team:

  • Tracy Wootten, Maggi Moor-Orth, and Sussex County Master Gardeners:  Brent Marsh, Jessica Clark, Jane Casazza, Susan Trone, Tracy Mulvaney, Mary Perkins, Mary Noel, Mary Hall, Marge Lewis and Linda Peters for:  “Peter Rabbit’s Adventure in Farmer McGregor’s Vegetable Garden,” a mobile theatrical presentation for children.

Epsilon Sigma Phi (ESP) the association of Extension professionals presented the following awards:

  • Adult Outstanding Volunteer Award- Hetty Francke.
  • Youth Outstanding Volunteer Award- Terra Tatman.
  • Group Outstanding Volunteer Award- Emerson Farms.
  • Friend of Extension- Agilent Technologies.
  • Meritorious Support Service Award- Sharon Webb.

Delaware State University recognized two Extension professionals:

  • Bridget McCrea – “1890 Administrator’s Award” for Extension Agriculture and Youth. Development.
  • Andy Wetherhill – “1890 Administrator’s Award for Diversity” in Agricultural Extension programs.

Earlier in the morning, the conference’s 100 attendees separated into agriculture, family and consumer science and 4-H youth development groups and discussed initiatives and exchanged new ideas on how to effectively reach their constituents’ future needs.

The ag group focused on how to enhance an $8 billion agriculture industry given current economic challenges.  Items of note included the ability to understand and anticipate the needs of the ag community, the capacity to engage those needs in a timely fashion and development and implementation of a strategy that creates an understanding and support for the value of Cooperative Extension.

Family and consumer science and EFNEP agents discussed what they see as emerging issues in nutrition, food safety, financial management and family well-being and how best to effectively communicate revised guidelines and research to local constituencies.

Through their diverse programming, 4-H reaffirmed that effective outreach to Delaware’s youth must rest on eight principles: a positive relationship with a caring adult, a safe emotional and physical environment, an inclusive environment, engagement in learning, opportunity for mastery, opportunity to see oneself as an active participant in the future, opportunity for self-determination and opportunity to value and practice service to others.

Tuesday’s gathering marked the last Extension Conference under the tenure of UD Associate Dean and Director of Cooperative Extension, Janice Seitz, who is retiring in April 2012. The ninth conference however, will not be Seitz’s last. In 2003, Seitz established the Lighthouse Award as a special honor bestowed to an Extension professional who “lights the way for others.” Each year, the holder of the Extension beacon has the responsibility to pass the award onto a deserving colleague. Doug Crouse, 2010 recipient, carefully considered his many options but concluded on one obvious choice, Dr. Jan Seitz, the founder of the award.

The award assures Seitz’s continued involvement in outreach programming and a return to next year’s conference to once again confer the award. But Seitz’s future participation was never in any doubt.  Though stepping out of her leadership role, Seitz plans to lend support and resources whenever needed.   “This is the greatest job I have ever had,” Seitz said. “I love Extension so much.”

Oct. 28: Friends of Ag

The Friends of Ag Breakfast Series hosted by UD Cooperative Extension will continue on Friday, October 28 at 7:15 a.m. at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover, Delaware. The speaker will be Dr. Limin Kung, S. Hallock du Pont Professor of Animal and Food Sciences at the University of Delaware. Dr. Kung’s presentation, “Ruminants: Metabolic Marvels of Nature,” will focus on the unique metabolism of ruminant animals explaining how they develop their digestive processes and how they digest and process the feeds that are offered to them. You will NOT want to miss Dr. Kung’s Cool Cow Facts!

Final Flavors

UD ice cream enthusiasts have voted and “Blue Hen Tracks” and “All Nighter” are the two finalists in UDairy Creamery’s Blue Hen Signature Ice Cream Contest.

Members of the UD community will have several opportunities to vote for their favorite, with the winning entry (both flavor and person) to be announced at Homecoming festivities. The winning flavor will be featured at the UDairy Creamery store and at Creamery concessions at Delaware Stadium on Homecoming weekend.

Taste tests and final voting will take place:

Thursday, Oct. 20: 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at both the UD Bookstore and Perkins Student Center; and

Thursday, Oct. 27:  5-7:30 p.m., at select dining hall locations in conjunction with Local Garden Harvest Dinners.

In addition, the UDairy Creamery team will be visiting a variety of UD locations throughout main campus and satellite locations throughout the state. For additional dates, times, and locations, be sure to follow the Creamery on Facebook and Twitter.

Blue Hen Tracks is vanilla ice cream with blue-shelled chocolate candy and a peanut butter swirl. The entry submission said: “The Blue Hen name association and color-combo is obvious. The ice cream mixture is simple and uncomplicated, which would stand the test of time. Anything too fancy or too complicated with lots of ingredients is trendy, but not always appealing to the largest group of consumers. I can already taste it — yum!”

All Nighter is coffee ice cream with cookie dough chunks, crushed chocolate sandwich cookies and a fudge swirl. This entry submission said, “Every college student has to pull an all nighter at some point in their college career. It can be sweeter with this delectable ice cream flavor. Designed to give you the sugar rush you need to survive a 24-hour cram session.”

Two of the eight final flavors that didn’t make the finals are currently being sold for a limited time at the Creamery store — UDe Leche and First State Cobbler. “We had left over ice cream from the taste tests,” said creamery manager, Melinda Litvinas, “and these two flavors were ones that we thought really stood up to our standards for flavors. We contacted the people who submitted the ideas, and they were happy to have their ice cream available for a limited time.”

UDe Leche — caramel ice cream with crushed vanilla cookies and a caramel swirl — was submitted by Michelle Pusey, a master’s student in the College of Arts and Sciences.  Pusey’s entry said, “This flavor would be the perfect official ‘Blue Hen’ flavor of the UDairy Creamery. The ice cream is crafted from UD milk from UD cows at UD! The simplicity of the flavor exemplifies the quality ingredients produced right here by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Just as the UDairy Creamery has fostered fellowship among the entire University, ‘UDe Leche’ will further unite the Blue Hen community.”

First State Cobbler — peach flavored ice cream with a cobbler crumble and blueberry swirl — was submitted by Anette Karlsson, professor and chair of mechanical engineering.  According to the entry, “Peach and blueberry capture the true flavor of the Blue Hen: It is golden and blue, and it represents some of the greatest produce that is grown in the state of Delaware. And who does not like a fruit cobbler?”

Oct. 19: Lies and Statistics

University of Delaware Prof. Joel Best will speak about his book, Damned Lies and Statistics: Untangling Numbers From the Media, Politicians, and Activists on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 3:30 p.m., in Room 132 Townsend Hall. A reception will follow.

According to the University of California Press, “In this book Best shows us exactly how and why bad statistics emerge, spread, and come to shape policy debates. He recommends specific ways to detect bad statistics, and shows how to think more critically about ‘stat wars,’ or disputes over social statistics among various experts.”

Best is a professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at UD. He has written extensively about the sociology of social problems.  In addition toDamned Lies and Statistics and its sequels, his books include Threatened ChildrenRandom Violence,Flavor of the Month, and two books published earlier this year – Everyone’s a Winner, and The Stupidity Epidemic.

He is a past president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems and the Midwest Sociological Society, the former editor of Social Problems, and the chief editor of the online journal Sociology Compass.  He has spoken about dubious statistics at campuses across the country, and before audiences of judges, journalists and legislators.

The event is co-sponsored by the Northeast Center for Risk Management Education, the UD Department of Food and Resource Economics and the UD College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Ice Cream Taste Tests

Free ice cream taste tests featuring the finalists in the UDairy Creamery’s Blue Hen Flavor Contest will take place over the next few weeks, with the first scheduled Thursday, Oct. 6, on The Green.

UDairy Creamery staff combed through the nearly 300 entries submitted by staff, students, alumni, parents and UD friends. Eight flavor entries were selected and those flavors are currently in development at the creamery. The eight finalists are being notified.

In the first week, a taste test of the chosen eight entries will occur.  Students who participate will be asked to vote for their favorite flavor and after tallying the results, the competition will be narrowed down to four finalists.

The next week, more taste tests and voting will lead to two finalists.

Votes will be tallied and the winning flavor will be announced during Homecoming Weekend. Prizes will be awarded to the winner and one randomly selected participant.

The taste test schedule is as follows, with all events running from at least 11 a.m.-1p.m:

• Thursday, Oct. 6 — The Green, near Gore Hall

• Thursday, Oct. 13 — Trabant University Center

• Thursday, Oct. 20 — UD Barnes and Noble Bookstore and Perkins Student Center
