Evening in Garden raises money for Food Bank of Delaware

Students, faculty and community members gathered in the University of Delaware’s Garden for the Community — a 15,000-square-foot service garden at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) — on Aug. 12 to celebrate the college’s partnership with the Food Bank of Delaware.

More than 150 guests attended the Evening in the Garden event, which brought awareness to the community garden project and provided additional support to the Food Bank of Delaware.

The Evening in the Garden raised more than $5,000 for the Food Bank and collected more than 600 pounds of non-perishable food items.

Those in attendance enjoyed garden-fresh food, courtesy of the Food Bank’s Culinary School; fine wine provided by Chaddsford Winery, Women of the Vine Cellars and Paradocx Vineyard; and live entertainment by Dodging Cupid.

The evening included a raffle, with prizes from Newark Natural Foods, Stone Balloon Winehouse, Gloss Salon and Spa, M. Fierro and Sons, the UDairy Creamery and UD Botanic Gardens.

Each year, more than 17,500 Delawareans turn to emergency food assistance. The Food Bank distributes 7-10 million pounds of food annually. Over three tons of produce from the garden were donated to the Food Bank in 2009, and current estimates have the garden slated to donate close to 5 tons in 2010.

CANR, Food Bank of Delaware Bring the Harvest Home

University of Delaware volunteers and students from The Culinary School at the Food Bank of Delaware spent the morning of July 30 harvesting 1,305 pounds of fresh produce from UD’s Garden for the Community.

Once the workers finished harvesting, they loaded a food bank van and headed to Sparrow Run Park in Bear where they distributed fresh produce, 30-pound meal boxes, chicken and other food items to 715 individuals.

Families received potatoes, okra, sweet corn, eggplant, peppers, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes and basil fresh from the University’s Garden for the Community. The garden is located on one-third of an acre on the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources campus on South College Avenue.

“Evening in the Garden” Food Bank Fundraiser on August 12

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Food Bank of Delaware invite you to an “Evening in the Garden” on August 12th (6 – 9 pm) to celebrate our ongoing partnership with the Food Bank, through our “Garden for the Community.”

The “Garden for the Community”, now in its second year, is a CANR outreach project, led by our undergraduate students and supported by many UD and community partners and volunteers. Our goal is to help the Food Bank meet its mission – “…a community without hunger”.  All fresh vegetables grown in the garden are donated to the Food Bank.

We hope you’ll be able to join us on August 12 for a wonderful picnic dinner made with food from the Garden, music, wine tasting, a raflle, and a food drive. Last year’s event was a wonderful evening, thoroughly enjoyed by the nearly 200 people who attended.

Volunteers plant seeds of hope at UD Garden for the Community

Volunteers from the University of Delaware and Food Bank of Delaware began the first stages of planting at the University’s Garden for the Community on Friday morning, May 7.

Located on one-third of an acre of land on UD’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources site off South College Avenue, the garden will provide a steady stream of fresh vegetables, herbs and fruits to Delaware’s hungry this season.

Volunteers spent the morning mulching, spreading compost and straw, harvesting radishes, planting cabbage and more. They were joined by U.S. Rep. Michael N. Castle and Laura Coogan from U.S. Sen. Tom Carper’s office.

“What a great partnership we have with the University of Delaware,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO Patricia Beebe. “The abundance of fresh produce they provide throughout the summer and fall months helps ensure that we get nutritious foods into the hands of those that need it most.”

“The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is very happy to continue our successful partnership with the Food Bank of Delaware by again planting our Garden for the Community,” said Tom Sims, deputy dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. “Last year, thanks to the help of more than 100 volunteers, our garden provided the food bank with more than 7,000 pounds of fresh, locally grown vegetables.”

Volunteers will be needed at the Garden for the Community throughout the summer months to help harvest, pull weeds, plant late summer crops and other tasks. Those interested in learning more can visit the Garden for the Community website.

In addition to helping at the garden, the Food Bank of Delaware also encourages the community to keep hungry Delawareans in mind as summer’s crop of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, string beans and more begin to sprout. Surplus donations can be donated directly to the organization’s hunger-relief efforts.

Volunteers Needed to Plant UD’s Garden for the Community

Volunteers are needed to help the University of Delaware and Food Bank of Delaware plant the “Garden for the Community” on Friday, May 7 (at 10 a.m.) and Saturday, May 15 (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

The garden, now in its second year, produced more than three tons of fresh produce for the Food Bank of Delaware’s hunger-relief efforts last growing season. Located on a third of an acre of land on the University of Delaware’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the garden will provide a steady stream of fresh vegetables, herbs and fruits to Delaware’s hungry.

“The Garden for the Community represents the core mission of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources — helping to feed the world in a sustainable manner,” says Tom Sims, the associate dean who is overseeing the project for the college. “We are privileged to manage UD’s 350-acre agro-ecology teaching complex and very happy to provide this land so that our students and community partners can help the Food Bank meet its mission, a community without hunger.”

The Garden for the Community is located in front of the Wilson Farmhouse on the UD Farm directly behind the Girl Scouts facility on Route 896 in Newark, Del.

UD assists Food Bank of Delaware in fight against hunger

The number of Delawareans seeking food assistance is at an unprecedented high, according to a study released in February by the Food Bank of Delaware and Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization.

To assist with the increased need for emergency food assistance, UD’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) and the Food Bank of Delaware (FBD) have teamed together to identify pockets of poverty throughout the First State.

Under the direction of Rhonda Hyde, associate professor of food and resource economics, four operations research graduate students generated sub-maps of Delaware categorizing the food assistance needs of different geographical regions. In order to collect this data, the students used census tracking and the GIS database.

Guang Xiao, a master’s student in operations research, said, “I learned a lot about how to provide sound solutions to real world problems in a managerial setting. After a fair amount of trial and error, we were able to provide recommendations to help the Food Bank create more efficient food distribution patterns.”

With the aid of Don Berry, education associate with the Delaware Department of Education, the student-based team was able to provide a large poster-sized map indicating the number of people at or below the poverty level in the entire state. In conjunction with the large map were a series of smaller maps that gave more detailed information about the specific areas with the most need.

The Food Bank plans to take this information and establish ties with local service agencies in order to optimize food distribution in low-income communities.

Charlotte McGarry, Food Bank of Delaware logistics and program director, said, “It is our goal to identify if there are any gaps in food assistance and, if so, do direct distributions of product from FBD or partner with hunger relief organizations to provide food to those communities. Ultimately, the FBD staff identified the level of knowledge, time and funding to execute such a project was not within the resources of our current staff and budget, therefore, when presented with this partnership opportunity from Dr. Hyde and her students we graciously accepted the much needed assistance.”

“The University is committed to improving the quality of life for all Delawareans,” Hyde said. “This project is an example of that commitment. We were more than pleased to have the opportunity to assist the Food Bank with its efforts to eliminate hunger in Delaware. The four graduate students who worked on this project persevered despite numerous setbacks in obtaining usable data. Their reward is knowing that their work will make a difference.”

This project is just one of many bringing together CANR and the Food Bank of Delaware.

Last year, UD dedicated part of its 350-acre agro-ecology teaching complex at the college as a Garden for the Community. In 2009, the garden produced more than three tons of fresh produce, which was donated directly to the Food Bank.

In March, CANR and the Food Bank of Delaware jointly hosted a “Think Spring Fling” event to jumpstart the spring community garden season. Approximately 100 garden lovers, UD staff and students, and community members enjoyed an array of educational displays and an eclectic selection of gourmet soups and seasonal breads, provided by the Food Bank’s Culinary School.

“We knew that there was a Garden for the Community, but we weren’t quite sure where it was,” said James Stokes, a sophomore hotel, restaurant, and institutional management major and member of UD’s Slow Foods student organization. “After attending this event, Slow Foods definitely wants to get more involved in agriculture side of things.”

The evening was a huge success, bringing in approximately $2,000 and 532 pounds of non perishable food items to the Food Bank.

Newark Mayor Vance A. Funk III said, “The partnership between CANR and the Food Bank is outstanding. These fundraisers are well attended and well appreciated. I would say that this is one of the best partnerships in our community.”

To learn more about backyard gardening, a wallet friendly way to get fresh produce, Slow Foods and the New Castle County Master Gardeners will be holding a “Backyard Garden: Seed to Table” lecture series May 10-11. These lectures will teach community members how to utilize fresh vegetables in their homes and the best ways to plant and raise a backyard garden. March 4: Think Spring Fling to raise money for Food Bank of Delaware

The University of Delaware College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Food Bank of Delaware will sponsor a Think Spring Fling event on Thursday evening, March 4, in UD’s Townsend Hall Commons, 531 S. College Ave., Newark.

The event will feature homemade soups and bread, live entertainment from Tater Patch and valuable information to help you get your spring gardens growing, all while raising money to help end hunger in Delaware.

The event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on March 4, with a snow date of March 11. The $25 entrance fee includes dinner and entertainment.
